Where do I buy books in India?

I buy original English titles only. New, and in good condition. Answers from any state is welcome. Please help me out. I’d love stores which offer discounts. Thanks.

I’d vote for Crossword Bookstores, any day!

They have their stores dotted all over the country, mainly in the main metro cities, though. But you can be sure of getting the best and latest books there any day. For me, the place is a paradise on earth 😀 They also sell their books through their online shopping service. But nothing like walking into a bookstore and and walking around aisles and aisles of books!

If you’re in Bangalore, then do visit Gangaram’s Book Bureau. They are one of the oldest and most reputed bookshops in Bangalore. They have two branches, as far as I know. I have been only to their first branch on Brigade Road. They have recently opened a new one on Church Street

You could also check out Sapna Book House with branches in several places in Bangalore, Mysore, etc. They claim to be India’s biggest book mall. But to be honest, I haven’t visited them yet. So I can’t give you a first hand report.

In Kerala, the most favorite haunt for booklovers is DC Books.

They stock both English and Malayalam books with nearly equal importance, thereby drawing readers of both Malayalam and English books in large numbers. They even give membership cards to frequent customers using which you get huge discounts on books you purchase.

And how can we forget the very iconic mother of all bookstores in India – Higginbothams!

They are the oldest chain of bookstores in India (they opened in 1844!) and when you step into one of their stores, it’s with a certain sense of reverence to all those great people who once frequented it.

Even if you don’t buy anything from here, a visit to this very temple of books is an experience in itself. They have branches, but I would personally recommend the first outlet on Mount Road in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

If all else fails, then you could try visiting WH Smith at the duty free sections of most of India’s airports.

I personally feel that they are a bit pricey, but you will get what you’re looking for if you’re willing to shell out a bit more.

Hope this helps! Happy reading! 🙂
