What can I do (for fun) in Doha, Qatar besides Islamic Art Museums?

Answer by Raakhee V. Menon:

It largely depends on your idea of ‘fun’, really. Personally, I have a few favorite haunts and of course, you’ll see that my idea of ‘fun’ is somewhere I could go with family or even solo.

Roam around Katara

Katara is my most favorite part of Doha. Everything about the place is just so lovely. The amphitheater, the various art exhibitions, the eating joints, the beach…it’s a lovely place to spend some quiet time.

Hang out at Bandar

Bandar is a place frequented by those who have been in Qatar for a long time. It’s a little piece of land that juts out into the sea on the Corniche. People drive down to the end and enjoy the splendid view of the West Bay from there. It’s a lovely place to go to on windy days and in the winter.

Spend some quiet time at MIA Park

This is the park just beside the Islamic Museum. It’s one of the newer parks here and is often praised for its landscaping and well maintained environs.

Visit The Pearl

And who in Qatar doesn’t enjoy spending time in the very pride of Qatar? The Pearl is a must visit for anyone who’s in Qatar for a short while or plans to be here for a long while.

I love the marina, but the entire place is a visual treat to spend time in.

Visit any of the umpteen Malls

My personal recommendations – Mall of Qatar, Doha Festival City, and Villagio.

Take a boat ride to Banana Island

This is good for a weekend getaway. The place looks fabulous and if you’re a photography enthusiast, you’ll have plenty of photo ops.

Relax at Sealine Resort

This is in Mesaieed. The resort offers plenty of activities and is a good place for a weekend picnic. Just outside the resort, you can try out the rides on the dunes.

Evening visit to Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif transports you to another era of the Arab World. It is considered to be one of Qatar’s most prestigious locations and is a must-visit spot for all visitors.

When you’re there, make sure you get a taste of the authentic Qatari food that’s available in little stalls in the restaurants area.

Enjoy a walk along the Corniche

Doha boasts of one of the most beautiful uninterrupted Corniches in all of the GCC. It stretches for a whopping 6km and is a favorite for walkers and health enthusiasts.

Check for the current exhibition at Qatar National Convention Center or at Doha Exhibition Center

There will always be some exhibition on show in either of the two exhibition centers. The Doha Motor Show just got over recently.

Take a dhow cruise on the Corniche

This is a lovely experience. You can rent a dhow from the Corniche and you’ll be taken for a 30 min or 1 hour long ride. It’s good fun. And don’t forget to take your camera along with you.

Take a long drive to either Dukhan or Shahaniya

This is for those looking for some action outside the city limits. People often drive up to Dukhan or Shananiya. You can see wild camels on the way. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot wild horses in the desert.

‘Fun’ is a very relative term. Many of my friends do much more wilder things than the ones I have mentioned. I’m a quiet person and my choice of activities may reflect that. Hope you find something fun to do soon enough! ^_^
