Bombay Vegetable Cheese Grilled Sandwich
I have had several kinds of sandwiches all my life, but this one rules supreme. Commonly called ‘Veg Sandwich’ in Mumbai, it is essentially street food. Wherever you see roadside food vendor carts selling chaat items, you can be sure that there will be at least one or two chaps selling these.
These are prepared by heaping vegetables, spices and lots of cheese in triangle shaped bread slices and then grilling them. It’s only in Mumbai that I have seen bread shaped like this…
This shows just how popular this sandwich is in Mumbai. They made a customized bread exclusively for this! 😀
Earlier, they were made with regular sandwich bread and then cut into triangles before serving.
It’s got all sorts of vegetables in it like slices of boiled potatoes, tomato, cucumber, beetroot, and onion, and all sorts of spices which they sprinkle on the vegetables with such lightning speed that it’s almost impossible to say what they’re adding. I believe they put in some chopped coriander leaves too. This is then grilled using lots of butter. Mumbai street food vendors tell us that if we wish to get authentic Mumbai street food taste, the food has to be prepared using only Amul Butter. And I agree to that 😀 After grilling, it is topped with a sinful amount of grated cheese that makes it impossible to see the sandwich beneath it. I kid you not!
This is actually lesser than normal 😛 These are typically served with green chutney, tomato ketchup, and spicy tomato garlic chutney. It has to be had hot or else it loses its crispiness making it a sodden mess in no time.
It’s very filling and easy on the stomach too. If your stomach is sensitive to the spices, you could ask them to tone down on the hot stuff and still the sandwich tastes just as wonderful!
